History of SSL
SSL technology was created in 1994 as Netscape Communications’ response to the internet cryptography and HTTP protocol security issue. It all started in November 1990 when CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire or Center for European Nuclear Research) made popular use of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). HTTP is an application layer protocol that allows two applications to interact with one another via a connection. This type of technology became the connected network now referred to as the World Wide Web. The idea of Secure HTTP motivated Netscape Communications to create a standalone secure cryptographic protocol called the Secure Sockets Layer Protocol. SSL protocol was an upgrade from the Secure HTTP because it allows the cryptographic protocol to work without being dependant on a web server or web browser.
